Train up a child in the way
he should go, and when he
is old he will not turn from it.

Did you ever forget that a noisy fan was going until someone snapped it off and the blissful sound of silence returned? If so, you know what to expect next week when no bothersome email comes urging you to take classes.

That’s because our first day of classes is this week, Wednesday, September 8th. And—you guessed it—it’s not too late to sign up for classes! Just scoot on down Wednesday and register on site. (We’ll be ready for you by 11:45.) We’d love to have your family join the more than three hundred students who are set to enjoy the classes and camaraderie. Moms, come Zumba with us!

Complete class descriptions are available online (omahahomeschool.com). We still have openings in Young Explorers, Simply Music, Cooking, Job Quest, Watercolor, General Art (10-18), P.E. (10-18), Hands On Science (6-10), Explore This art, Fun with Spanish, Embroidery, Zumba, ACT Prep, American Government, Personal Finance, Wildlife Discovery, Simply Music, Ballroom Dance, Sign Language, and Advanced Tae Kwon Do.

Classes are held from noon to 4pm on Wednesday afternoons at Benson Baptist Church (64th and Maple). Most classes cost $80 for the 12-week semester; some classes have supply fees as well.

Here’s a sampling:

YOUNG EXPLORERS: I also want to remind everyone about our wonderful preschool class, Young Explorers. Every day features an art project, stories, games, songs and other themed-activities, as well as free play. Your kids get to do those messy art projects, but your house stays clean! I love to visit this classroom: the atmosphere is so peaceful and rich with students happily engaged in their activities. We see kids at this age just blossom in this setting. As one of our moms writes, “It's so nice that the kids can get a ‘preschool’ class experience without having to worry about unwanted influences, curriculum, etc. It's just perfect!”

COOKING: And speaking of perfect, wait till you smell the delicious food that our cooking class whips up. Wow!  Students produce tasty creations while learning food preparation and cooking skills, creating such comfort cuisine as turkey chili, fried vegetables, pancakes, roll and cut sugar cookies, and more. Students will also learn about legumes, fruits, grains, meat substitutes, vegetables, and proteins.

JOB QUEST: THE ESSENTIAL JOB SEEKING SKILLS (Suggested ages 14-Adult)
Are you looking for your first job or returning to the workforce? This is the class for you! We will cover the basics of finding employment opportunities, resume creation, application completion, and interviewing. During the course, each student will complete at least one job application, develop a resume, and participate in at least one mock or real job interview. Join us for an exciting opportunity to learn the tools necessary to navigate the current job market successfully. Students must have access to a computer with internet access and a word processing program and printer or typewriter.

Time: 2pm  Cost: $80  Class fee: $5

WATERCOLOR (Suggested ages 9-Adult):

And we are very happy to welcome back working Ukrainian artist Inna Kulagina, who you may have seen featured in the World Herald last spring. Unlike other types of paint, watercolor has a mind of its own: unpredictable but exciting and beautiful. This class lets you explore this medium by painting a landscape and still life. To do this, students will learn the color wheel, color values, transparent and opaque paint, watercolor techniques such as washes, wet-into-wet, wet-on-dry, dry-on-dry, over-painting, and, oh yes, have FUN. This is one of a series of classes offered in partnership with Arts For All, a dynamic non-profit education program, whose goal is to provide quality classes that are affordable to all.
