Speech Division
Purpose
To provide an opportunity for students to acknowledge their
talents and glorify the Lord through Speech. To display
students’ mastery of the skills necessary in communicating
during public performance.
1. Categories
Grades 1 - 4:
Poetry
Bible Memorization
Grades 5 & 6:
Poetry
Bible Memorization
Patriotic Oration
Dramatic Bible Prose
Original Speech
2. Entry Limits
a. A school may send one student for each category from
each homeroom, at every grade level.
***Homeschoolers may enter one student for each category
for every 25 students at that grade level.
b. A student may participate in only one category.
3. Entry Fees
a. $4.00 per student

4. General Information
a. A student may participate in only one category of the
Speech Meet.
b. All presentations must be memorized (notes/note cards
are not permitted.)
c. Prompters are permitted but strongly discouraged.
d. Eye contact should be with the audience, not with the
judges.
e. Costumes and/or props are not permitted in any of the
categories.
f. Decisions of the judges will be final.
g. Picture-taking and/or camcorders are not permitted during
student presentations.
h. Emphasis will be on the use of voice and facial expression,
not on movement and gestures. Some bodily movement may be
appropriate to enhance the presentation, but not required.
Students are not acting, as in a play. Gestures should not
be overdone to detract from the selection, there should
be no walking around during a presentation.
5. Category Descriptions
- A. Poetry
- 1. Selections
All presentation must be from published works. Selections
must be
compatible with Christian morality and propriety.
Length of selections should be appropriate for the
age level.

- 2. Introductions
Students should begin their presentations by stating
the title and author only.
- B. Bible Memorization
- 1. Selections
Grades 1 & 2: 2 - 6 Verses
Grades 3 & 4: 6 - 12 Verses
Grades 5 & 6: 10 - 15 Verses
Scripture passages must come from one of the following
Bible versions:
King James Version(KJV)
New American Standard (NAS)
New King James Version(NKJV)
New International Version(NIV)
- 2. Introduction
Students should state the Scripture reference and Bible
version.
- 3. Delivery
Students will give the introduction, present the passage,
and give a brief summary of the passage meaning, all
from memory. The brief summary of the passage meaning
should be in the child’s own words.
- C. Patriotic Oration
- 1. Selection:
This category is for patriotic material written by
or presented by famous persons. Selections should
be 300-500 words. Patriotic poems are not appropriate
for this category.
- 2. Introduction
The introduction should include the title and some
background on the piece to be presented (one to three
sentences).
- D. Dramatic Bible Prose
- 1. Selection
This category is for the dramatic presentation of
a Bible story, in the form of a speech or interpretation.
Selections should be approximately 300-500 words in
length. Students may (but are not required to) select
passages out of the Message or Living Translation.
- 2. Introduction
Students should begin by stating the title and/or
Bible reference.
- E. Original Speech
The entire speech must be written and presented by one
student. No more than 60 words of quoted material may
be used. The speech should be approximately 300-500 words
in length. While it is not intended to be a sermon, the
speech must relate to Christian principles and/or Christian
influence.
