Nebraska--Hearing On L.B. 1141 Set for February 26

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

The Nebraska Unicameral Education Committee has scheduled Senator DiAnne Schimek's bill, L.B. 1141, for a hearing on February 26. On that day, HSLDA Attorney Michael Donnelly will join other Nebraska homeschool leaders to testify against this ill-conceived and unnecessary legislation. Please mark your calendars and plan to join hundreds of other Nebraska homeschoolers to demonstrate our resolve to oppose this legislation. It is crucial that as many people as possible show up to demonstrate our resolve. So please mark your calendars now and plan to attend. We will give you more details as the time draws nearer.

Also, if you have not yet registered to attend the NCHEA Legislative Day, we urge you to do so today. Please come to Lincoln to tell your senator that Nebraska homeschoolers do not want or need any further government regulation. Register via email at: register@fsvmail.net

Finally, take a moment to politely register your opinion in opposition to today's editorial in the Lincoln Journal Star on the homeschool bill. The Journal Star has taken the position that a simple annual testing requirement is acceptable.

To read the editorial and comment you can go to:

Of course, the problem with any testing requirement is that it can be a sneaky way to control what is taught. If a person has to pass a test, then what is on the test has to be taught - and this is one way testing bills unreasonably interfere with homeschools. Of course, academic performance is only one reason that people homeschool. Many people homeschool their children to provide them with a safer environment and a tailored and individualized learning program, and to insure that they are taught family values.

ACTION REQUESTED

> Register for the NCHEA Legislation Day (February 6th).

> Plan to attend the February 26th hearing on LB 1141 as we demonstrate our resolve to oppose this poor legislation.

> Comment on the Lincoln Journal Star's editorial.

Thank you for all you are doing to preserve homeschooling freedom in Nebraska!

Very Truly Yours,

Michael P. Donnelly, Esq.
HSLDA Staff Attorney
