Homeschooling in High School for Higher Education
By David P. Byers, Ph.D.

Reviewed by Kelly Benedict

Does the name David Byers sound familiar to you? It should! You might remember his article on the front cover of the October HEN Newsletter? The article titled, “How Do You Know What to Teach?” You remember now, don’t you…our one and only David Byers?!! David and his wife, Chandra, have 6 children and have been homeschooling for 12 years now. He is currently finishing his Ph.D. in Education, and specializing in teaching and learning. You may have also seen his name in the newsletter in connection with the starting of our very first homeschool newspaper, and along with Jack Donnelly and the Homeschooling High School group.

Mr. Byers has written this book to assist homeschooling parents in teaching their children through the high school years. Many parents are apprehensive when it comes to their children’s education, especially when their child/children desires to go to college. I believe that this book will reassure the parents that they can do it, and do it successfully! Mr. Byers begins his book with a history of homeschooling and what opponents to homeschooling have to say about it. He then covers a myriad of subjects related to homeschooling your high school aged student, such as - Life Choices Your Child Has to Make at the End of High School, The Skills Your Student Needs to Succeed in College, Which Teaching Approach Works Best for High School? How Do You Know What to Teach? and so forth.

Section IV of his book is titled, “Putting it All Together – Homeschool, High School, and Higher Education.” Here you will learn how to develop a syllabus, create assignments, set up a schedule, and keep records for college admissions, plus much, much more. As he writes in his book, “A high school schedule should be challenging enough to keep the student busy as part of helping him/her prepare for the fast-paced and rigorous learning environment of college. Yet, a high school schedule should also be balanced to give the child time to read the material, to complete textbook-type assignments, and to have time to plan and complete fun and rewarding projects.”

Written from experience, as well as much research, this is a book that will help you “use the high school years effectively in order to help prepare your child for the academic rigors of higher education.”

Thank you, David, for all you have done, and are doing, for the benefit of the home schooling community!
