The Homeschooler’s Guide to Portfolios and Transcripts
By Loretta Heuer, M.Ed.

A Book Review
By Kelly Benedict

It’s hard to believe that this is already March and that the school year is coming to a close, isn’t it? Where has the time gone? It is the time of year when many home schooling families will be getting ready to prepare portfolios and/or transcripts for their children. Many of you may have started already, while others of you have been procrastinating over the need to do so. Maybe you’re an adolescence who is preparing your own portfolio. No matter what your personal circumstance is, if this is the case, I have a book for you to read!

At some point during your child’s schooling, you might ask yourself, “Am I really teaching them anything? Are they really learning? Is it all worth it?” This is could be a signal that you need to make learning visible by creating a portfolio. A portfolio will help you see for yourself, as well as show your child/children, their skills, and their learning from another perspective. It will help you keep faith in both yourself and in your homeschooling, giving you a badly needed boost when your confidence is low and you are plagued by doubts.

This book has chapters on Enhancing, Documenting, and Communicating Your Homeschool Experience, Creating Your Portfolio, Transcript Basics, Creating Your Transcript, Preparing for College Admissions, plus many other crucial chapters. In this book you will also find sample transcripts and portfolios, helpful words and terms to use, and print and Internet resources that are also available to you. You’ll learn to construct a comprehensive high school transcript, complete course names, descriptions, and grades that will satisfy college registrars and potential employers.

If you want a thorough book that can walk you through the steps of this whole process, then this is a book that you will want to own. It’s one worth buying!
