Have you ever wondered what a school day is like at someone
else’s house? Have you ever wondered what they do
differently that you might find useable? As Susan Richman
says in her forward of the book, “Probably all homeschoolers
wish they could just take a peek into other homeschooling
families’ days. How do they do things? How do they
move through the day? How do they organize themselves? (Or,
is anyone else disorganized like me sometimes?) We meet
one another at homeschool support group meetings, we visit
one another at our homes, and we talk and talk and it’s
wonderful support. But that chance to really see what happens
on a real day at someone else’s home—that’s
something we all can only long for.”
In this book, Nancy has taken real life days of 30 different
families and given us a peak in to their homeschooling days.
She has collected a variety of families, some with one child,
some with many children. She has talked with a family living
in Vermont, and even a family who lives as far away as Senegal,
Africa.
Rev. Peter A. Lillback could not explain this book better
than by saying, “Nancy Lande’s ‘Patchwork’
is even more than the title suggests. To be sure, it sews
together the differing colors and textures of a host of
homeschooling philosophies and schedules. But this Patchwork
is not meant to only be a quilt to decorate a private room.
Rather, she has fashioned the Patchwork into a coat of many
colors, tailored to fit the active and energetic lives of
the visionary families who take up the homeschooling challenge.
Just as Joseph’s coat from his father Jacob was a
prophecy, so this ‘Patchwork’ predicts success
for those who take the challenge of homeschooling.”
How do you schedule your day? Are you more lax or rigid?
Do you use a variety of curriculum, or do you use one specific
curriculum? Have you been homeschooling for years and would
like a new way to do things? Maybe you’re contemplating
homeschooling, but are not sure how to set up your day?
After reading this book, I can assure you that you will
have many ideas, some new and some old, that will inspire
you to develop your own uniqueness as a homeschooling family.
