A Father's Reward
By Phil Downer

A Reader’s Review
By Kelly Benedict

WOW! What a blessing this book is!

Phil and his wife, Susy, live with their 6 children in Chattanooga, TN. Having once been senior partner in a large law firm, he is now president of CBMC (Christian Business Men’s Committee). He is author of this wonderful book, as well as the book, “Eternal Impact.”

We live in a day and age where dads are scarce, to non-existent, in many family homes today. Oh, they may be there to “bring home the bacon”, so-to-speak, but as far as being involved in the upbringing of their children, so many husbands/dads have taken a leave of absence from the raising of their children. But do you know what? DADS MAKE A DIFFERENCE! And guess what else? It is possible for fathers to discover God’s will for their families! Every father is called to get involved with his kids, even if he doesn’t have a natural aptitude for it.

As Phil writes, “I became concerned about the development of our kids spiritually, and I realized that they need me to disciple them. I can’t just sit there and bark orders to them and expect them to buy in to my ‘Christian virtues.’ I need to get involved in their lives. If I want to be with them, I need to offer some attraction for them to be with me. I need something that pulls them out of their peer group and makes them want to be with me instead. That is where most men are struggling right now. They come home tired, and the only time they spend with their kids tends to be barking orders and instructions at them over meals before they go with their friends, or when they are trying to get their kids up in the morning. That is not modeling your faith to your children, and discipline without a strong personal relationship breeds rebellion.

One of the ways we dads provoke our children is by having two standards. We expect them to be good and follow God, but we claim the privilege of doing anything we want to do. We need to live by the same rules we ask our children to live by.”

There are some specific things that we need to do to help our kids walk in the truth. We need to build a safe relationship, work toward developing a peaceful home, develop their minds, talk to them about purity, talk to them about money, let them hear you say nice things to your wife, begin to build a vision in them, and so forth. These are just a few things that this book discusses.
