“Did you know that one third of the men who signed
the Declaration of Independence, the Articles of the Federation,
and the Constitution of the United States had no more than
a few months of schooling under their sleeves?” (Writes
Grace Llewellyn in her book The Teenage Liberation Handbook)
Do you recognize any of these other homeschoolers? For instance,
Beatrix Potter, Alexander Graham Bell, Orville and Wilber
Wright, Mozart, Charles Dickens, Agatha Christie, Hans Christian
Anderson, C.S. Lewis, Leann Rimes, and the list goes on.
As Mark Twain once said, “I have never let my schooling
interfere with my education.” Isn’t that an
awesome statement when you think about it?! How many of
our children will one day look back at their education with
that thought in mind?
This book covers a multitude of questions, answers and
statistics. Subjects such as: How Did Homechooling Begin-and
where is it going? Is Homeschooling the Right Choice for
Your Family? The What Ifs and the What Abouts, How Do I
Cope With the Rest of the World?, What About The Teen Years?
And even answers questions like, How much time does homeschooling
take? (And will I still have time to do other things than
just homeschool?)
One thing that I have enjoyed about this book is the sections
called “In the Trenches.” Throughout the book
are small sections where a homeschooling family tells us
their homeschool story, and offers advice and encouragement
to others along the same path that they have been on. Those
are worth reading in itself.
Says author Tamra Orr, “Homeschooling is a journey
for all those who choose to take it. This book is a reflection
of what I have learned on this journey, and I hope it can
act as a road map that makes your trip easier. There are
no mandatory routines; detours are almost always inevitable
and can be the best part. Plot your course, grab your compass,
and start the expedition. Wishing you many delightful discoveries!”
