Managers of Their Homes
By Steven and Teri Maxwell

Reviewed by Kelly Benedict

Steven and Teri Maxwell are the parents of 8 children. They began homeschooling in 1985. You may have heard of their website… www.Titus2.com?

I am in agreement with them that a homeschool mother’s greatest challenge may be ‘getting it all done.’ Managers of Their Homes offers solutions that can change your life and help you feel that you have actually accomplished much more in your daily life than you ever imagined! “Step-by-Step instructions and a unique scheduling kit make the setting up of a daily schedule easily achievable for any homeschool family.”

Why schedule you might ask? Let’s think of it in the way God does, shall we? ”God has given us a powerful example and analogy of scheduling in the natural world. Everything that He created, from atoms to the universe, has a periodic cycle. There is a timetable that God has applied to each part of His creation. This is easily seen in the weather. Year by year, each season comes at it’s “scheduled” time bringing with it predictable changes. Here we have a picture of our daily-life schedules. These change, too, as the “seasons” in our families change.

God has planned for interruptions to this seasonal pattern of creation. They come in the form of storms – winter snow storms, spring showers, tornados, summer thunderstorms – that blow in unplanned and unscheduled. They are often fierce, demanding attention, but sometimes they are gentle and refreshing. So, too, into our schedules, God pushes storms of interruptions. They can be fierce and demanding as a medical emergency, or they can be gentle and refreshing as an unexpected lunch date with your husband. If God felt it was important to place His creation on a schedule, perhaps we should seriously consider the need to schedule our own lives. Observing God’s dealing with His universe can give us the pattern and motivation for our choice to plan and put a schedule into our homes.”

This is a 178-page book, with 17 separate chapters, is packed full of scheduling tips, ideas, sample schedules for everyone in the family (even the baby), chore scheduling ideas, summer scheduling ideas, and even a Chapter titled, “Managers of “His” Home: A Chapter for Dads.” The appendix is filled with 35 different individual schedules from different homeschooling families that gives you a glimpse into their lives to help you design your own schedule. One of my favorite parts to the book are the letters from moms at the beginning of each chapter, as well as what they call, “A Personal Word” (which is on the side bar of each page), from other homeschooling moms with their own encouraging words and tips that have worked for them personally. If you want to feel that you are accomplishing more in your days than you are now, this is a book worth reading!

A word of caution – Each new book purchased comes with a colorful scheduling kit for up to eight children. However, if you acquire or purchase a book that is used, you may either need to purchase the kit separately, or devise your own.
