My Husband Isn't Supportive
Q: I’m new to homeschooling,
and my husband is willing to give it a try, but is skeptical.
I feel so much pressure to make sure my children perform
so that he won’t give up on homeschooling. I've also
heard that the dad's involvement is so important. Is it
possible to successfully homeschool when dad isn't that
interested or supportive? Do you have any advice for me?
A: I want to encourage you to homeschool your children,
to communicate with your husband about your homeschooling,
and to encourage him to be involved to the extent to which
he is willing.
Your husband's willingness to try it, though skeptical,
gives you an opportunity to pray and trust the Lord. If
He is calling your husband and you to homeschool, He can
influence your husband's heart and opinion as He gives you
the wisdom and grace to teach each of your children. As
you seek the Lord's guidance for your teaching, He will
help each child to learn and enable you to help each child
towards becoming the adult He has created him or her to
be.
A dad's involvement in homeschooling is definitely beneficial
and helpful, but homeschooling can be individualized to
fit a variety of different home situations. I have known
successful, often long term, homeschooling to occur in homes
in which the dad isn't that interested or supportive, in
homes with single parent moms, in homes where the mom has
to work to supplement the dad's income, and in homes with
a stay at home dad who teaches the children while the mom
works.
Blessings to you and your family as you step out in faith
to begin your homeschool adventure!
