Winter Blues
by Linda Price
Q: I think I’ve got the winter
blues. Do you have any suggestions for coping with these
cold months when the daylight hours are shorter and we are
all cooped up together inside?
Winter blues can set in during the cold months when daytime
hours are shorter, but trying to find a balance between
fun indoor and outdoor activities can help to lessen those
"blues."
Regardless of age, when the weather permits, outdoor activities
like sledding, building a snow man, or constructing a snow
fort are fun and can be a nice break from school as well
as a chance to "recharge." And no one can deny
that a steaming cup of hot cocoa and marshmallows or smores
is the perfect ending to invigorating fun in the cold!
Leaving the house for other indoor field trip activities
as a family or with other home school families can also
be a "pick-me-up." Field trips can be co-ordinated
with lessons being studied or might just include a trip
to your local ice rink to skate.
When staying in the house for school, hands on activities
and games can be used to supplement lesson plans and make
learning more exciting. For a treat, make a big pot of soup
or chili, bake some muffins, and invite another home school
family over for lunch.
With a positive perspective, winter home school activities
can provide an exciting opportunity to make learning fun,
to enjoy the beauty of the changing season as reflected
in the uniqueness of each snow flake, and to feel the warmth
of shared experiences with family and friends.
